The tender for the project was held on July 25, 2013, and the contract was signed on September 13, 2013. Fieldwork commenced on September 25, 2013. The existing Şırnak–Van road is 351 km in length. Upon completion of the project, the route will be shortened by 167 km, reducing the total length to 184 km. The total length of the new road to be constructed under the contract is 45 km, comprising 15 km of tunnels (12 tunnels in total) and 30 km of open road sections.
Within the scope of the project, the T1 tunnel, the longest among the 12 tunnels with a length of 2,833 meters, has been constructed. In addition, a 13.6-kilometer section of open road, five military outposts (kalekol) and their associated access roads have been completed.
The revision works of the existing 32-kilometer Çemikari road have also been finalized. As of 31 December 2025, the project has received its provisional acceptance.
